Tennis Elbow Treatment

Tennis elbow: a brief introduction

Tennis elbow (also known as lateral epicondylitis in medical terms) is a type of tendinitis-swelling of tendons that causes pain in elbow and outside part of arm.

The muscles and tendons present in forearms get damaged by repetitive strenuous motions. It leads to development of pain and tenderness on outside of elbow. As the name suggests, tennis elbow and tennis sport do not share any connection.

Playing any sport or indulging in any activity that involves repetitive gripping especially putting strain on thumb, wrist and forefingers may put an individual at the risk of tennis elbow. This condition may pop up in people of any age group but it is more common around the age of 40.

Tennis elbow treatment

Tennis elbow is self limiting i.e. it will heal on its own. All that you need is to allow yourself a break from all such activities that requires repetitive gripping and may aggravate the condition further. However the duration may vary from person to person depending upon the severity of the injury. Some of the widely used treatments available to treat tennis elbow are listed below.

  • Applying Ice pack on the affected area twice to thrice (for 20-30 minutes every time) in interval of 3-4 hours for 2-3 days or until the pain is gone.
  • Prevention is better than cure. Wearing an elbow strap may help in protection of injured tendon and will prevent further damage to it.
  • Different types of motion exercises as directed by physician should be practised in order to reduce the stiffness present in elbow thereby improving the flexibility.
  • Physical therapy is also an effective treatment.
  • Taking pain killers or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs/ injections may help in dealing with pain and swelling.

Aforementioned treatments will work in case of slight injury. In case severity is more, one may need to consult a doctor for surgery if the condition persists for more than 3 months. Surgery is effective in 80-90 % cases.
